Electricity is produced in power plants using different power sources such as fossil fuels (coal, oil, and gas), nuclear fuels (uranium, plutonium, and thorium), water, wind, biomass and solar energy.

Development of the power industry and exploitation of resources in Slovenia and Croatia are increasingly characterised by domestic conditions and European guidelines covering protection of the environment, sustainable development, the level of acceptable energy dependence, deregulation and privatisation of the energy sector.
